Grey Funnel Line noun

The navy

Origin

From the song of that title by Cyril Tawney 1959

Collector

Mark – 2000s
Mark Iliff – owner

Notes

In days gone by there were more shipping companies around, and their names included Blue Funnel Line, White Funnel Steamers and Red Funnel Line. (The last still runs between Southampton and Isle of Wight.) The song title is a merry conceit on the idea of serving in the navy as some sort of holiday
