I lift up my finger and I say tweet tweet verse/song fragment

Callback to:
I lift up my finger and I say tweet tweet, shush shush, come come, now now.

I don’t think we ever worked out what prompted a recital…

Origin

From the London Musical Comedy “Love Lies” (Leslie Sarony 1929) and recorded by Gracie Fields & others.
(The now now should come before the come come, but that’s the way Granny used to sing it)

Collector

Granny Dixon – 1929
Marion Dixon (Howes) – mother of Mum, spouse of Pop

Notes

Felix spotted this reference:
I suppose, if you had been in San Francisco when the earthquake started, you would just have lifted up your finger and said “Tweet, tweet! Shush, shush! Now, now! Come, come!”
—from The Jeeves Omnibus - Vol 3 by P. G. Wodehouse.

The song is also performed by Hugh Laurie in the 1990s TV adaptation Jeeves and Wooster
