Rickety Rackety Bridge noun

The Bailey bridge that used to carry the A246 Leatherhead by-pass across the River Mole

Origin

The phrase is from a version of the fairytale The Three Billygoats Gruff, but we didn’t know that – just that it referred to our bridge

Collector

Iliff family – 1960s
Mark’s family growing up

Notes

Bailey bridge: a WW2 portable prefabricated truss bridge.

The section of road was built by the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1941, which would explain the military bridge. It has since been replaced with a permanent structure
